Minimal Data

We only collect what's necessary to provide the service

1. Introduction

Thread Context ("we", "us", "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our Chrome extension ("Extension", "Service").

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By installing and using the Extension, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use the Extension.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

When you use Thread Context, we may collect the following information:

  • Account Information: If you create an account or authenticate through a third-party service (e.g., Google), we collect your email address, name, and profile information provided by that service.
  • Thread Content: Text and content you select and save when creating conversation threads. This data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage API.
  • User Preferences: Settings and preferences you configure within the Extension.

2.2 Automatically Collected Information

  • Usage Data: Information about how you interact with the Extension, including features used, frequency of use, and error logs.
  • Device Information: Browser type, version, operating system, and unique device identifiers.
  • Extension Version: The version of Thread Context you have installed.

2.3 Information We Do NOT Collect

We want to be clear about what we don't collect:

  • We do NOT read, collect, or store your full AI conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini
  • We do NOT track your browsing history or activity outside of the Extension's functionality
  • We do NOT access your personal files or other browser data beyond what's necessary for the Extension to function
  • We do NOT sell your personal information to third parties

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • Provide the Service: To enable the core functionality of creating and managing conversation threads
  • Maintain and Improve: To analyze usage patterns, fix bugs, and enhance the Extension's features and performance
  • User Support: To respond to your inquiries, provide customer support, and troubleshoot issues
  • Communications: To send you updates, notifications, and important information about the Extension (you can opt out of non-essential communications)
  • Security: To detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, and security vulnerabilities
  • Legal Compliance: To comply with applicable laws, regulations, and legal processes

4. Chrome Extension Permissions Explained

Thread Context requires specific Chrome permissions to function. Here's exactly what each permission is used for:

📦 Storage Permission

What it does: Allows the Extension to save your thread data, preferences, and settings locally on your device.

Why we need it: To persist your threads and settings between browser sessions without requiring a server-side database.

Privacy impact: Data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's secure storage API. We do not transmit this data to our servers unless you explicitly sync across devices.

🖱️ Context Menus Permission

What it does: Adds a "Create Thread" option to your right-click menu when you select text.

Why we need it: To provide a convenient way to create threads from selected text without additional UI elements.

Privacy impact: Only activates when you explicitly right-click on selected text. We only access the text you've selected when you choose to create a thread.

🗂️ Tabs Permission

What it does: Allows the Extension to detect when you're on supported AI platforms (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) and interact with those specific tabs.

Why we need it: To identify AI conversation pages and enable thread creation functionality only on supported platforms.

Privacy impact: We only check if the current tab URL matches supported AI platforms. We do not access or monitor other tabs or your browsing history.

📱 Side Panel Permission

What it does: Enables the thread management interface in Chrome's side panel.

Why we need it: To provide a dedicated space where you can view, manage, and navigate between your conversation threads.

Privacy impact: The side panel only displays data you've explicitly saved. It does not access or display any other browser information.

🔔 Notifications Permission

What it does: Allows the Extension to send you browser notifications.

Why we need it: To notify you when threads are created, updated, or when important Extension events occur.

Privacy impact: Notifications only contain information about your thread activities. You can disable notifications in the Extension settings at any time.

5. Data Storage and Security

5.1 Local Storage

By default, your thread data is stored locally on your device using Chrome's secure storage API. This means:

  • Your data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers
  • Data is encrypted using Chrome's built-in security mechanisms
  • If you uninstall the Extension, your local data will be removed

5.2 Cloud Sync (Optional)

If you choose to enable cloud sync to access your threads across devices, we will:

  • Store your thread data on secure, encrypted servers
  • Use industry-standard encryption both in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest
  • Only sync data when you're signed in to your account
  • Allow you to disable sync and delete cloud data at any time

5.3 Security Measures

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information, including:

  • Encryption of data in transit and at rest
  • Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments
  • Access controls and authentication mechanisms
  • Secure development practices and code reviews

However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

6. Third-Party Services and Integrations

Thread Context integrates with third-party AI platforms:

  • ChatGPT (OpenAI)
  • Claude (Anthropic)
  • Gemini (Google)

Important: We do not control and are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party platforms. When you use Thread Context on these platforms, your interactions with them are subject to their respective privacy policies:

Thread Context does not transmit your conversation data to these platforms beyond what you explicitly input when creating threads.

7. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as necessary to provide the Service and fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy:

  • Local Data: Stored on your device until you delete it or uninstall the Extension
  • Cloud-Synced Data: Retained until you delete your account or request data deletion
  • Account Information: Retained for the duration of your account's existence
  • Usage Data: Typically retained for 12-24 months for analytics purposes

You can request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us or using the data deletion feature in the Extension settings.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
  • Notify you through the Extension or via email for material changes
